Is Looking at Puppies for Adoption Right for Your Family?

Puppies are adorable. There is no denying that. However, they come with lots of responsibilities that a new adopter needs to consider. Looking at puppies for adoption without getting to know their breed and personality and considering the challenges that can come with training isn’t always a great idea. Here are a few things to consider that can help you decide whether looking at puppies for adoption or bringing an adult dog into your home is the best option for you and your family.

Looking at puppies for adoption

  • Time for Training- Be realistic about the amount of free time you would be able to devote to housetraining and other basic commands. Consistency is key, so if you have a crazy schedule and too much on your plate right now, it might be wiser to go with an older dog that has already received basic command training.
  • Puppy Proof House- Puppies are naturally curious and can be quite mischievous. Are you prepared to have your favorite slippers or shoes destroyed? Do you have an antique area rug that costs a ton to get cleaned? You should expect some mischief when you have a puppy. If that is okay with you, then go ahead and look at puppies for adoption. If not, aim for a mature dog that may be more well-mannered.
  • Lifespan- A key advantage of looking at puppies for adoption is that they will provide a lifetime of love and happiness. A younger pet or puppy will be with you for many years to come. However, it is important to consider your lifestyle and season in life when considering pet adoption.

Godbey Creek Canine Rescue takes in dogs of all different ages and sizes. We occasionally have puppies for adoption, but most of the time we have rescues that are a bit older. We find that most people who adopt favor the older dogs because they are trained in basic commands, have been housetrained, and can fit into a household more readily. We are happy to answer any questions you may have that can help you make the decision between a puppy and mature dog, so feel free to contact us.
